"Hey everyone,
First of all, I'm a little nervous up here. This is a huge honor. I want to start by thanking my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for blessing me with the talent to play this game, and for blessing me with a family that has supported me every step of the way. At this moment, I am your humble servant, and words cannot adequately describe how important my faith is to me in playing this sport, in understanding who I am. I am so fortunate to have been blessed with the opportunities I've had, and I am deeply grateful for where I am today.
I love basketball, and I think that's pretty obvious. I've been playing since I was two years old, with a toy basketball. My grandmother is here today, and we were talking about it yesterday. She used to be my commentator, my Bob Fitzgerald, keeping score for me. Whenever I made a game-winning shot or something, I would run over, stumbling and falling, to high-five her and celebrate. So, from the beginning of the story to standing before all of you today, it's been an incredible journey, with so much happening along the way.
Throughout this journey, I've met so many wonderful people who have contributed just as much, if not more, to this trophy as I have. I want to mention every single one of you, whether you're here in person or watching on TV, who have made this journey meaningful for me. And if I happen to miss someone, please understand that it's not intentional; I'm still overwhelmed with happiness and it's inevitable that someone might be left out.
Obviously, we're in the middle of the playoffs right now, and that's the most important thing. But today is a celebration, and I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for everything. That's the purpose of this speech. I want to do my best to explain how I feel right now, so bear with me.
I have to start with my wife. We met in Charlotte, North Carolina, when we were just 14 or 15 years old. The past seven or eight years have been amazing, growing up together, moving across the country, starting a new life together. You've been my rock, allowing me to pursue my career, to focus on basketball and my professional life, while also creating a home for us. The sacrifices you've made are unbelievable. I have a thousand words and they still wouldn't be enough to thank you for who you are, for the inspiration and encouragement you give me every day. I love you so much, and you are my strength every single day. I have so much gratitude for everything you do for me.
And then there's Mom and Dad. I don't think anyone can understand the gratitude my siblings and I have for you two. Dad, you had a 20-year NBA career, you gave us life, and you taught us how to be good people. Mom, you were our spiritual guide, sometimes our strict teacher, because when Dad wasn't around, it was always you. Obviously, if we ever got into trouble, Dad would come home and take care of it. But Mom, you were so meticulous in raising us, not allowing any slack.
Sports were important to our family, but life has priorities, and your faith came first. The way we were raised in school was very important. If we didn't fulfill our obligations, we couldn't enjoy any rights. I remember missing my first middle school game because I hadn't finished my chores at home. It's pretty embarrassing to have to tell your team, 'Hey guys, I can't play tonight because I didn't do the dishes.' So that lesson taught me that life is more important than basketball. Family is always the most important thing. We take care of each other, love each other, no matter what. And I know that whether I play basketball or not, you'll love me just the same. You'll support me wholeheartedly no matter what path I choose. Thank you so much for that.
Dad, you're a true professional on and off the court. I remember so many moments of your career, and it means so much to me to be able to follow in your footsteps. It's been such a special experience. I'm so proud of everything you've accomplished in your career, and I don't take any of it for granted. A lot of people think that because my dad played in the NBA, everything was easy for me. I'll talk more about that later. It's been an amazing journey. You've been a great example for me in starting a family and building a life. Thank you, Dad.
My brother, Seth, he's here too. Buddy, I'm so proud of you. We've had so many battles growing up, from 1-on-1 in the backyard. I always joke that our games would go all night. They would only end for two reasons: you'd steal the ball and run around until I said, 'Alright, alright, you can have your foul call,' and then you'd stop. Those brotherly battles were full of fun, and I'll never forget them. Now looking at you, you've grown up and have your own career. I know it's not easy having an NBA brother, especially with a dad who had a successful NBA career before us. But the way you've handled it is admirable. The sky's the limit for you. Keep doing what you've been doing, and keep making this family proud.
[Other family members and friends are mentioned with heartfelt thanks and anecdotes.]
And finally, I want to thank all the coaches who have helped me along the way. Coach Kerr, you've been so humble this season.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Living in the moment, working our butts off every single day, and inspiring people around the world to be themselves. Stay humble, stay grateful for the blessings in your life. It's truly an honor to compete this year. Thank you very much."
